Welcome to "Wheaten Barn" !
The Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are a wonderful breed. Full of life, extremely affectionate, incredibly friendly, demonstrative, sweet and funny, they are the best companions ever.
The Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers also known as "Wheaten Terriers" are smart dogs. They can easily be trained to do what "they" want to do but they will always end in doing what you want them to do just because they love to please their family members.
The Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are not kennel dogs. It would terribly affect their happy temperament. They are family dogs and they need to share a family life inside the house.
Bonus : they are hypoallergenic. They don't shed. No daily vacuum cleaning needed.
Here at "Wheaten Barn", we exclusively breed Irish coat Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers.
Our mission and goals are to protect and to perpetrate the Irish coated lines.
Our bloodline foundations are strictly based on the oldest Irish lines and we keep going on with the pure Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier type.
You wish to adopt a purebred dog, take the time to read the breed standard and to compare it with what you can see and read. What is the point to pay for a purebred dog if it does not look like the type of the official standard of the breed ? Why to pay for an hybrid dog when you can get the original ?
Only one type of coat does exist in the breed, the Irish coat. This kind of coat is the only one officially recognised by the Irish Kennel Club and the F.C.I. Any breeder claiming that the American type of coat is also right, would show its incompetency whether from ignorance or through dishonesty. All dogs carrying the American fluffy, woolly type of coat, black ears and/or black beards do not belong to the breed.
They are not Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers ! As mentioned in its breed name, the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is an Irish dog, then it is logical for it to wear an Irish coat...
Be careful while looking for a puppy. Remember that only one coat type is recognised by the breed standard, the Irish coat one. Be also aware that there are mixed lines, these lines are on the sly because the dog has an Irish coat but one or more of its ancestors has an American type one. So this dog can genetically carry the fault and pass it on to its progeny. Of course, it is not always easy to find it out. Take your time and ask as much as possible the right questions to the right persons.
Ireland hold a seminar in Dublin on October 2011 and has clearly stated its position over this problem calling breeders and judges to respect the standard of the breed : "Judges and breeders should be very aware of the fact that in Europe the Irish standard from the country of origin of this breed is acknowledged by the F.C.I. Judges and breeders should stick to these rules. F.C.I. in its rules clearly states that judges must always judge according to the F.C.I. standard which is the one of the country of origin. Without the proper coat there can be no discussion, the dog must be disqualified. In the F.C.I. standard it says : eliminating fault. A dog with an untypical expression, a woolly thick coat, etc... may be a spectacular animal to some but it is certainly not an Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier."
Only Ireland is the owner of the breed and its standard. It is legitimate that Ireland wants to protect it and to keep it true to type. We love our true Wheatens, help us to protect them. Thanks.
